HISTORY & RECORDS BREAKS

Kilimanjaro has fascinated explorers and adventurers for centuries. The first recorded ascent of the mountain occurred in 1848, when a German missionary named Johann Krapf made it to the mountain’s lower slopes, though it was not until 1889 that the summit was first successfully reached. The first recorded summit of Kilimanjaro was made by Hans Meyer, a German geographer, and Ludwig Purtscheller, an Austrian mountaineer, on October 6, 1889. Since then, it has become a popular destination for trekkers from around the world.

Record Breaks:
  • Fastest Ascent and Descent: The fastest ascent of Kilimanjaro was achieved by German mountaineer Karl Egloff, who summited in 4 hours, 56 minutes, and descended in 6 hours, 24 minutes, setting a combined record of 11 hours, 20 minutes on September 14, 2014.
  • Most Successful Climber: As of now, the record for the most summits of Kilimanjaro is held by a Tanzanian guide, who has climbed the mountain over 300 times, assisting others to reach the summit.
  • Youngest Summit: The youngest person to summit Kilimanjaro is an 8-year-old from the United States, who reached the peak in 2019.
  • Oldest Summit: The oldest person to reach the summit was a 94-year-old man from the United States, who made the climb in 2014, defying age barriers.
Kilimanjaro remains a testament to human endurance and resilience, offering a unique experience for climbers who seek to conquer the highest peak in Africa.
