Overview

Mount Meru (4,566m), Tanzania’s second-highest peak, offers a thrilling yet less-crowded trekking experience. This 3-day trek is a shorter but challenging adventure, taking you through lush rainforests, wildlife-rich landscapes, and dramatic ridgelines. The climb provides incredible views of Kilimanjaro and is perfect for acclimatization before attempting Africa’s highest peak or as a standalone adventure.

Itinerary

Day 0: Arrival in Arusha

Elevation: 1,400m (4,593ft)
Altitude Gained: None

Activity: Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to your hotel in Arusha. Your guide will conduct a trek briefing, check your gear, and answer any questions. Rest and prepare for the climb ahead.

Day 1: Momella Gate (1,500m) to Saddle Hut (3,500m)

Elevation: 1,500m to 3,500m
Distance: 18 km
Altitude Gained: 2,000m

Activity: Start the trek at Momella Gate after park formalities. Hike through forests where you may spot giraffes, buffalos, and monkeys. Pass Miriakamba Hut before continuing the steep climb to Saddle Hut. Upon arrival, take an optional acclimatization hike to Little Meru (3,820m) before resting early for the summit push.

Day 2: Saddle Hut (3,500m) to Socialist Peak (4,566m) & back to Miriakamba Hut (2,500m)

Elevation: 3,500m to 4,566m (summit) to 2,500m
Distance: 18 km
Altitude Gained: 1,066m (ascent), 2,066m (descent)

Activity: The summit attempt begins at midnight, following a steep trail along Meru’s crater rim. Reach Socialist Peak at sunrise and enjoy breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro and the surrounding landscapes. Descend to Saddle Hut for a short rest, then continue down to Miriakamba Hut for the night.

Day 3: Miriakamba Hut (2,500m) to Momella Gate (1,500m) – Return to Arusha

Elevation: 2,500m to 1,500m
Distance: 10 km
Altitude Lost: 1,000m

Activity: After breakfast, descend through lush forests, spotting wildlife along the way. Arrive at Momella Gate, receive your summit certificates, and transfer back to Arusha. Relax at your hotel or enjoy a celebratory meal.
